Today I choose joy with hearts t-shirt

How do you intentionally CHOOSE joy?

Learning this is one of the most difficult, most rewarding things I have EVER done!

I've read literally hundreds of books, attended conferences and seminars, and even taken classes (currently in my dual-Master's degree program to become a licensed therapist) simply to figure out how to be happier in my life!

I've learned that saying daily affirmations to myself is vital. When I catch myself using negative self-talk (I suck, I'm ugly, I'm stupid, I'm fat, we don't have enough money) I have to stop myself! Then I force myself to think of things I like about me.

At first, it felt very uncomfortable to do this. It seemed easier to complain and be negative- but I didn't like how it felt. So I tried thinking of positive things, even if I didn't believe them yet.

So I started to say, "I'm pretty. I have friends who care about me. My family loves me. We have more than we need. There are things I'm good at. I can always learn more." And everyday I started to believe it.

Anytime I'm stressed about money, scared my kids won't turn out ok, or worried about an upcoming thing-- I force myself to instead feel hopeful, excited, and grateful about the future.

I know it sounds totally cheesy, but these are the things that have changed my life. I don't have clinical depression anymore. We're not living to paycheck to paycheck anymore. I'm not worried my marriage is going to fall apart anymore.

I actually enjoy my kids now! My marriage is the best part of my life. We have savings in the bank. And we're living in our dream home.... I'm not special or born with something amazing or different than you {I promise!} I'm super normal, even average. But I have intentionally chosen to live my life with JOY. And that has made all the difference. Somehow now it just looks like I'm "lucky" or special. I'm not. It's a choice.
